A TEAM from Elmwood Presbyterian Church travelled to Armenia
this month to work on the Scripture Union campsite.
David McKechnie, Sandra Boomer, Kyle Acheson, Jane Maxwell,
Stewart McEvoy and Emma Philpott flew out on Sunday (July 10) to
Nor Gekhi near the capital city of Yerevan in Armenia to work
with the Brotherhood of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
This will be the third year that a delegation has travelled
from the local church and in previous years they have been
involved in building work on the site and taking part in local
Christian and Church meetings.
Emma and Sandra have both been to Armenia before and this
will be Kyle's third trip, having worked at Nor Gekhi last July
and September.
This is the first trip for Jane, David and Stewart, who are
all looking forward to the experience.
Jane and Kyle are joint leaders on the visit and the church
have been praying for them. This year it is hoped that the team
will be able to join with young people from the surrounding area
at a Scripture Union Summer Camp.
There will be approximately 40 children from 8-12 years of
age staying at the Nor Gekhi Campsite, who will benefit from the
help and guidance of the Lisburn workers.
Elmwood Presbyterian Church organised several events to raise
money to support the team and the work in Armenia.
Volunteers from the church helped to pack customers bags at
Marks and Spencer, Sprucefield and a car boot sale was also held
in the church car park.
An Armenian evening and supper was held in May when Rev David
Bruce from Scripture Union and a member of Elmwood
reported with a video presentation on a recent visit to the
campsite in Nor Gekhi.
A talent competition and Dutch auction, together with a
treasure hunt and barbecue, was also held recently.
The fundraising events managed to raise a fantastic 7,000
for the team's visit.
As well as fundraising the church has also been offering the
team support through prayer and have held Sunday prayer evenings
to pray for the safe travel and visit.
The Lisburn team flew out of Belfast City Airport on Sunday
July 10 and travelled via London and Prague to Armenia, where
they will be working for four weeks before returning home on
Monday August 1.
The church have also organised a website, thanks to the
expertise of Colin Campbell, to enable the team to communicate
with all their supporters back home in Lisburn.
All members of Elmwood congregation are looking forward to
this year's team trip and to see and hear of God's continuing
work in Armenia.
