The Mayor of Lisburn City Council, Councillor Trevor Lunn,
led the first abseil for a local charity on Saturday 23rd
September, from the roof of Lagan Valley Island.
Scores of volunteers joined with Councillor Lunn to raise
funds for Reachout Ministries, who work with families in the
poorest regions of South America.
The
Mayor said, I am delighted to have been asked to be the first
person to abseil today. Reachout Ministries is a very worthy
local charity, which obtained its charity status in August
past. Today, all funds raised will go towards providing a
minibus for children who live in Chiquimala town, near Guatemala
City in South America. The minibus is needed for impoverished
families to send their children to school to get an education,
which so many never have the opportunity to receive.
Poverty is a word used frequently nowadays, but Reachout
Ministries provides the very basics in life that we all take for
granted like soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, some of which
has already been provided by schools in Lisburn. Without any
education, children from this area will never have the chance to
change their lives which is why I am appealing for funds to help
Reachout Ministries in the vital work they provide, he
concluded.
The Mayor thanked all those who had organised the event as
well as the scores of people who braved the elements and
participated in the Abseil.
In an interview after the abseil the Mayor said, It was
slightly scary going over the edge at the top, but I was in good
hands.
The event was organised by I Love Mondays on behalf of
Reachout Ministries with the support of Lisburn City Council.
The Abseil Organisers, High Point Group, has worked with the
charity. A list of forthcoming events from I Love Mondays can
