A service of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight was held in
Saint John the Evangelist�s, Magherally last Sunday evening
(17th December) at 7.00 pm. The Rector, the Rev Elizabeth Hanna
welcomed the large congregation and thanked all who took part in
the service. The congregational carols were: Once in royal
David�s city, Good Christians all rejoice, It came upon the
midnight clear, Love came down at Christmas, O little town of
Bethlehem, Joy to the world, Silent night, While shepherds
watched their flocks by night, O come all ye faithful and Hark
the herald-angels sing. In addition there were two special
musical items, which were written for this occasion: �The
Magherally Nunc Dimittis� (composed by Mr Darwin Martin) and �A
Christmas Fugue� (composed by Mr Robert Jacobs).
The nine readings were: Genesis 3 - God speaks to sinful Adam
(read by Mr John Baker � Rector�s Churchwarden), Genesis 22 -
God�s promises to faithful Abraham (read by Mrs Heather
Griffin), Isaiah 9 - The prophet foretells the coming of the
Saviour (read by Mr Dessie Adair), Isaiah 11 - The peace that
Christ will bring is foreshown (read by Mr Bertie McRoberts),
Luke 1 - The angel Gabriel salutes the Virgin Mary (read by Mrs
Dorothea Stevenson - People�s Churchwarden), Luke 2 - Saint Luke
tells of the birth of Jesus (read by Mrs Irene McKnight), Luke -
The shepherds go to the manger (read by Miss Rebekah Spratt),
Matthew - The wise men are led by the star (read by Mrs Hilary
Menary) and John 1 - The Incarnation (read by Rev Elizabeth
Hanna - Rector). The church, which was recently Highly Commended in the Places of
Worship built before1800-1900 category, was magnificently
decorated for the occasion with over 450 candles. Followed the
service, seasonal refreshments including Preacher�s Punch and
shortbread, were served in the church.
