Women's World Day of Prayer at Dromore Methodist Church

DROMORE Methodist Church will host this year's Women's World Day of Prayer service locally,

Women's World Day of Prayer services are held throughout the world each year on the first Friday of March.

This year's service in Dromore will be held on Friday, March 3, beginning at 8pm.

Guest speaker for the service at the Maypole Hill church will be Mrs. Angela Lipsett from Portadown, who had recently worked with a team at a children's camp in Kenya. Mrs. Lipsett, who is to return to Kenya at Easter, attends the weekly Women's Study Fellowship at Belfast Bible College.

A retired nurse, Mrs. Lipsett's hobby is painting and the sale of her work has helped fund her trips to Kenya.

Women from various churches in Dromore will take part in the service by reading and also singing in the choir.

Everyone is invited to attend the service.

A spokeswoman said, "If you have never come before then please plan to make this your first time."

International speaker on divine healing to visit Belfast

PASTOR Mike Evans from Bakersfield California, an international speaker on divine healing, is coming to Belfast at the beginning of March.

He will be visiting a number of venues across the city, including St George's Church on Monday March 6 at 1pm and St Anne's Cathedral the same day at 8pm.

Brother David Jardine, director of Interdenominational Divine Healing Ministries, who arc sponsoring the visit, said: "Mike Evans is a very good teacher, but in addition to that people can come to these services to receive prayer if they are sick or have difficulties of any kind."

Local people urged to support 24-hour fast

TRCAIRE is urging people from the Lisburn area to support its annual 24-Hour Fast which is taking place next Friday and Saturday (March 3 and 4).

The fast will focus on the Philippines where millions of people live in poverty, often without a secure home or even a clean water supply. Trcaire's work in the Philippines involves education, healthcare and land rights.

The Philippines is currently in urgent need of extra help due to the recent devastating landslide which destroyed an entire village killing up to a thousand people and leaving many more missing.

David O'Hare from Trcaire has just returned from a visit to the islands where he visited the charity's partners and the communities where they work.

He said: "Thirteen million children die every year in the developing world due either to malnutrition, lack of immunisation or water borne disease, often because their parents cannot afford basic medicine.

"These premature deaths could be avoided if people had access to the basic resources we take for granted in Northern Ireland such as water and sanitation, education and healthcare.

"Funds from the 24 Hour Fast allows Trcaire to continue its work in the developing world." Last year students and individuals from around the country, north and south, raised over 680,000 for Trcaire's long-term development programmes worldwide.

"Schools all over the country have been really supportive every year with pupils and teachers making an enormous effort to gather sponsorship and organise the fundraisers," said Mr. O'Hare.

Paul Kane, Trcaire's regional fundraiser, said: "We're here to encourage people to take on the fast this year and have some fun with it. "Organise a group of fasters in your school or workplace, or invent your own alternative to fasting. Most importantly, get involved and see how great it feels to support communities in the developing world."

Those who don't wish to fast can raise money by other means, such as holding a sponsored cheese and wine lunch, a sponsored lunchtime concert or a sponsored shaving.

For a quirky fasting alternative people may set out a Cheeky Challenge for a friend, colleague or family member and sponsor them to complete it. People have been challenged to give up smoking for 24 hours, to turn off their mobile for a day or come to work in costume to raise money for Trcaire.

Log on to www.trocairefast.org or Freephone 0800 912 1200 to register for the Fast and get a free Fast Pack. Fasters can also develop their own online sponsorship page through www.trocairefast.org where friends and family can sponsor them online.

Lisburn joins World Day of Prayer

LISBURN will be joining in Women's World Day of Prayer on Friday March 3, with an event in First Lisburn Presbyterian Church at 8pm.

Everyone is welcome to join representatives from the many churches taking part, including a massed choir of more than 60 voices.

The service has been compiled by the Christian women of South Africa. They have given the worship a real flavour of their country, with reference to life there and examples of their language in song.

The special speaker will be Rev Hiram Higgins, who recently returned from 24 years in South Africa. This will be a service of variety and joyfulness as befits a land known as the 'Rainbow Country', due to the many different nationalities living there.
