Dean Barr
A service celebrating the 60th anniversary
of the Ordination of the Very Reverend Norman Barr will be held
in Christ Church, Derriaghy on Sunday 12th November at 6.30pm.
The preacher will be the Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan
Harper.
Mr Barr was made Deacon in St Patrick�s
Church, Ballymena on Sunday 24th March 1946 and was Ordained
Priest in St Mary�s Church, Crumlin Road, Belfast, on Sunday
22nd December of the same year. He served as Curate of Ballymena
(1946-52); Curate of St Anne�s Cathedral Mission based at the
Mariner�s Church Hall, Nelson Street, Belfast (1952-54); Rector
of Duneane and Ballyscullion (1954-58); Curate-in-charge of
Whiterock, Belfast (1958-61) and became Rector of Derriaghy in
January 1961 where he stayed until his retirement in October
1990.
He was Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of
Connor (1956-71); Examining Chaplain (1971-90); Rural Dean of
Derriaghy (1972-90); Prebendary of Cairncastle in the Chapter of
St Saviour, Connor (1980-82); Dean of Connor (1982-90); and
Honorary Clerical Secretary of the Diocese (1984-90). Mr Barr
also served as Chairman of the Down, Connor and Dromore Library
Committee; played an active part in the production of the Connor
Clergy Succession List and is still an active member of the
Connor Graveyard Committee.
Many parishioners of Derriaghy will be
interested to recall that his brother, the late Reverend Canon
Osborne Barr, served his first curacy in Derriaghy 1946-48.
