Dean Norman Barr |
Dean Norman Barr, former Rector of
Derriaghy Parish, launched his new book last Thursday evening
(29th June) in the Parochial Hall, Christ Church,
Derriaghy. The present Rector, the Revd John Budd, chaired the
proceedings. Launching the book, the Rt. Revd Samuel Poyntz,
former Bishop of Connor, gave a comprehensive overview of the
book and in conclusion said it was a mine of information, not
only of the parish - but a story of the community. Stanley
Bell, a parish representative, said that records of Derriaghy
Parish have recently been sent to The Public Records Office (PRONI)
and explained that one of the senior collators had commented -
The records of the parish are the most complete in the Diocese
of Connor. Prior to signing copies of his new book, Dean Barr
thanked Bishop Poyntz for launching the book and also thanked
the Rector and the Select Vestry for hosting the event.
On display during the evening was an
interesting exhibition designed by parishioners Stanley and
Winifred Bell showing photographs and posters of events in the
parish dating back to 1893.
The new A4 size publication containing over
100 photographs and illustrations is a revised, added to and
updated version of Mr Barrs first book of the same title
Christ Church, Derriaghy, A Short History of the Parish
which was published in 1973 to mark the Centenary of the
Consecration of Christ Church, Derriaghy on Thursday 17th
October 1872.
