Preaching at the service, the Archdeacon of Dalriada, the Venerable Patrick Rooke, who has recently been appointed Dean of Armagh, explained how the chapter is made up of prebendaries and Dignitaries often with the names attached of ancient parishes in the diocese and that some of these Prebendaries are more senior than others.  Then, as one moves on up, comes the role of Treasurer, Precentor, Chancellor and finally Dean; and in this diocese, two Archdeacons squeezed in there below the Dean.  He said that with Mr. Harriss appointment, so the musical chairs (as they are fondly referred to) must first take place as chapter members move up a stall with a new title bestowed, and that how this to the onlooker can appear bewildering.

Tonight belongs to the new Canon, Archdeacon Rooke said, and it is rightly a moment of great personal pride that the Bishop has chosen to acknowledge Ernests ministry in this way; and for his wife Ray, their family and many personal friends and also all of the Parish of Ballinderry where he has served lovingly and faithfully for almost 16 years.

In addition to Canon Harriss installation as Prebendary of Cairncastle, the following installations took place:

  • The Rev. Canon Stuart Lloyd, Precentor as Chancellor.

  • The Rev. Canon Percival Walker, Treasurer as Precentor.

  • The Rev. Canon Sam Wright, Prebendary of Kilroot as Treasurer.

  • The Rev. Canon George Irwin, Prebendary of Rasharkin as Prebendary of Kilroot.

  • The Rev. Canon William Bell, Prebendary of Connor as Prebendary of Rasharkin.

  • The Rev. Canon George Graham, Prebendary of Cairncastle as Prebendary of Connor.

The Dean of Connor, the Very Rev. John Bond, conducted the installation ceremony. Also taking part were the Registrar, the Rev. Canon Edgar Turner, the Chancellor, the Rev. Chancellor Stuart Lloyd and the Archdeacon of Connor - the Ven. Stephen McBride. The Bishop of Connor, the Rt. Rev. Alan Harper presided.

The Rev. Kenneth McGrath - Vicar of Lisburn Cathedral led the service; the Very Rev. John Bond and the Rev. Chancellor Stuart Lloyd led the prayers; the Rev. Canon Ernest Harris and the Rev. Canon Percival Walker gave the Scripture readings. Andrew Skelly - Organist, and the Cathedral choir led the praise.  The hymns were: In the name of Jesus, I, the Lord of sea and sky, O Christ the same, through all our storys pages and Glorious things of Thee are spoken.  The anthems were: Breathe on me, Breath of God and God be in my head.

Referring to the Scripture reading from 1 Samuel 3: 2-18, read by Canon Ernest Harris, Archdeacon Rookes address recalled how Eli told Samuel to respond to Gods calling saying, Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth, or in the words of the hymn that was sung, Here I am, Lord.  He explained the importance for each one of us to answer the same when called to be Christian disciples.  He continued, With position comes responsibility, if installations mean no more than a change of letter heading, then we are failing miserably.  Responsibility is not just to continue the work in your parishes, but also to assume roles in the diocese, in the wider church and in your country and to extend your personal ministry - to worship the God and creator of all.

After the service of installations, the ladies of the congregation served a lovely supper in the Church Hall.
