The story of the Nativity was presented in a '
Festival of Nine
Lessons and Carols'
by Candlelight at St Columba's, Derryvolgie
last Sunday evening (16th December). The Rector, the Rev Donna
Quigley led the service and welcomed the congregation thanking
all who took part and gave a special welcome to the newly formed
Derryvolgie Singers who sang
'
O Holy night'
, '
See Him lying in a bed of straw'
and '
Gift of
the Father'
under the direction of the group'
s leader, Graham
Murphy.
Jonathan Acheson presided at the organ and led the singing of
nine well-known carols. Also taking part were Jack Hassard
(Diocesan Reader), Dorothy Jackson (Parish Reader), Nina Dillon,
Eve Cully, Mary Donnelly, Derek McAllister, Brendan Kane, Colin
McDonald and Andrew Sproule.
In a short Christmas message the Rector said that '
a Scriptural
text is not just any story; it is a text that is divinely
inspired'
. She asked the question, '
Who is Jesus Christ'
'
and
went on to explain that He was the Messiah portrayed both as the
Word and as the Light of the world. She further explained that
when He is received wholeheartedly as Lord and King, then the
Word of God will go forth from our lips and the Light of God
will shine forth through our lives.
Following the service, seasonal refreshments of mince pies and
shortbread were served.
