The
Ulster Friends Home Mission Committee will launch The
Testimony of a Whatnot, the autobiography of their late
Friend, Elizabeth F Pritchard (1906 -2002), at a Launch
Morning in the Lisburn Friends Meeting House, Prospect
House (in the grounds of Friends School) next Saturday
morning (15th November) at 10.00 am to 12.30pm. At 11.00am
there will be three short formal presentations about the
book including a presentation about whats going on in India
today. It is hoped that a number of other organisations,
like the Leprosy Mission and OM will attend as well as
people from the Indian community and that the launch will
provide an opportunity to raise money for flood relief in
Bihar where Betty and Herbert spent so much of their lives
together.
Known to all as Betty, she wrote 3 works of fiction during
her life time (sadly all are out of print), many articles,
and a series of Sunday School lessons; many were not only
distributed in the UK and India, but also more widely, being
translated into several other languages. She also wrote For
such a time (Victory Press 1973), a history of the 75 years
of the Regions Beyond Missionary Union (RBMU) from its
establishment in 1898 by Henry Grattan Guinness and his wife
Lucy.
Short description for ISBN
The autobiography of a Lancashire girl, born into Edwardian
England, who answered the call to be a Christian Missionary
in India; in a lifetime of 96 years she was to witness the
turmoil and changes from British Raj to independence, and
this largely viewed from a remote dispensary in poverty
stricken Bihar. Her gift for writing conveys the nature of
the times, a love of India, a selfless dedication to
service, and a very deep faith; it is a story, which might
make the reader query modern values.
