Subject: The career of the Rev. Samuel Halliday (1685-1739) as scholar, army chaplain, court lobbyist and Presbyterian minister
The Rev Samuel Haliday (1685-1739) was born in Omagh where his father was minister. He was educated at the universities of Glasgow and Leiden. He became minister of Belfast’s First Presbyterian Church in 1720 and was at the heart of the debates over subscription at that time. However, prior to that, he travelled around Europe establishing friendships with many leading scholars and theologians, he served as Chaplain to a Scots Cameronian regiment in Marlborough’s army and worked as a lobbyist in the Royal Court in London.
