Series of Sunday evening services in First Lisburn
will explore the ‘Sermon on the Mount’
The
Rev Craig Mawhinney will commence the first of an interesting series of
five Bible ministry evenings entitled ‘Sermon on the Mount’ in the Upper
Room of First Lisburn Presbyterian Church on Sunday 22nd February from
6.30pm to 8.00pm; continuing on Sunday evenings 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th
March at the same time. Craig, a member of Ballycrockan Presbyterian
Church in Bangor, is a gifted teacher who currently carries out his
ministry as Director of Training in the PCI Youth and Children’s Board.
He lives in Bangor with his wife and three children and his interests
include an extreme passion for Liverpool FC!
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is probably the best-known section of Jesus’ teaching. It has been called His manifesto - Jesus’ description of what He wishes His followers to be and to do. John Stott has called it, “a description of what human life and human community look like when they come under the gracious rule of God”. It holds a wealth of wisdom and direction for us as a 21st century, city-centre congregation, covering topics such as our character, influence, morality, inner life, ambitions, relationships and commitments. Jesus has something to say to everyone. Craig adds that just some of the questions we will be looking at as we seek to get to grips with perhaps this most famous of sermons are: The Sermon on the Mount is all about living in sync with the norms of God’s rule- but just what did Jesus mean by this?; Is the Sermon just a collection of ultimately unrealistic highs ideals or is it the description of people revolutionised by those same principles?; What has Jesus to say about my life? My family, friends, work and faith?; Is religion as dangerous as Jesus makes out?; and What does discipleship ‘Jesus style’ really look like?
The church music group will take part in the services and you might find it helpful to bring your Bible. The Prayer Healing Ministry Team will be available after the services and refreshments will be provided for those who would like to stay and chat.
