Former Mayor is guest speaker at Railway Street
COUNCILLOR Ronnie Crawford was the guest speaker at morning worship in
Railway Street Presbyterian Church last Sunday (February I4).
In keeping with the church's mission statement, 'Following Christ -Serving the Community', the former Lisburn Mayor spoke on the subject 'Lisburn as I see it'. Thanking the minister, the Rev Brian Gibson for his invitation, he said that he was pleased to take part in the service, one of a number of events t( celebrate the I50th anniversary of the congregation. Councillor Crawford spoke of the modern facilities in our thriving city and went on to give some of the city's downside statistics, which include the highest rates of domestic violence and suicide in Northern Ireland Speaking of how people set God aside in this 'want everything - want it now' culture, he concluded by emphasising the need to fear God and keep His commandments.
In a challenging sermon, the Rev Brian Gibson, spoke on the theme, 'Serving the Community - in Lisburn. Mr Gibson spoke of the need to build Christ's kingdom on earth by showing compassion for people in all walks of life in our community. The aptly chosen closing hymn was, 'Filled with Compassion' which speaks of the need to be stirred to action and be filled with passion for all the people who live on the earth. During the service, little Max Robbie Henderson, infant son of Michael and Laura Henderson, was baptised. Prior to the baptism, Laura's mother, June Martin, read the Scripture lesson.
