The daughter of former Kilwarlin Rector
installed as the Dean of Ossory
THE
Revd Canon Katharine Poulton has been installed as Dean of Ossory in the
Diocese of Cashel & Ossory, becoming the first woman to be appointed as Dean
of Ossory and only the second female dean in the Church of Ireland.
Canon Poulton is the daughter of the Rev Robert Noble, the former Rector of Kilwarlin outside Hillsborough. She was educated at Princess Gardens School (now Hunterhouse College), Belfast, and Manchester University and trained for the ministry in the Church of Ireland Theological College. She was one of a small group who were the first women to be ordained deacon in the Church of Ireland in 1987.
After curacies in the dioceses of Down, Dromore and Connor, Canon Poulton became curate in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, in 1999.
The following year she was appointed as Bishop's Curate of the Dublin north inner city parishes of St George and St Thomas based in Cathal Brugha Street where she has presided over the development of a vibrant multi-cultural religious community. In addition to her parochial responsibilities she is chaplain to Mountjoy Prison and chaplain to the Mater and Temple Street hospitals, Central Director of Ordinands and, since 2007, a canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
Her husband, the Revd Ian Poulton, is Rector of Killiney (Ballybrack) in south Co. Dublin.
Canon Pouiteon's installation to the Incumbency of the Kilkenny Group of Parishes and Installation as Dean of Ossory in the Diocese of Cashel & Ossory took place on Friday May 21 in St Canice's Cathedral.
The service was conducted by the Right Reverend Michael Burrows, Bishop of Cashel & Ossory.
The preacher at the service was the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church the Most Revd David Chillingworth.
