RECENTLY appointed Employment and Learning minister Danny Kennedy has paid a visit to Stepping Stones in Lisburn. Stepping Stones, which is based in Seymour Street, supports people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties into employment.
Mr Kennedy was welcomed by members of the Board and was introduced to
trainees and staff before being shown around. He had the opportunity to
speak to trainees and ask questions about the impact the work of the
organisation on them achieving their goals towards getting a paid job.
The organisation currently delivers training and employment services part
funded by the Department of Employment and Learning in partnership with the
NOW project of North and West Belfast.
Through the support of the Employment Service at Stepping Stones 34 people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties have been supported into sustainable employment with local employers.
Chief Officer Paula Jennings told the Minister: "The work of the organisation has made such a difference to the young people helping them to achieve the job that they have all ways wanted, and supporting them in employment when they have achieved it. The successful Workforce project part funded by DEL makes it all happen."
Mr. Kennedy commented; "Stepping Stones carry out sterling work in
assisting people
who have a learning difficulty realise their full potential, through
offering training, work placements or helping retain suitable work for
participants.
"I have been very impressed with the quality of the training I've seen at Stepping Stones. To see how the skills and confidence of the trainees and participants can develop while on placement, is testament to time, quality and effort put into vocational training here at Stepping Stones."
The Minister continued: "I am also proud that my Department, through staff in Lisburn Jobs and Benefits Office, is able to support this worthwhile project through their services and I wish Stepping Stones continued success."
