local Sea Cadets complete new entry training
The ten new recruits into the Lisburn Sea Cadets who have successfully completed their New Entry Part One Training at the recently reopened unit based at the rear of the Bridge Community Centre in Lisburn.
THE first of ten new recruits into the Lisburn Sea Cadets have successfully completed their New Entry Part One Training at the recently reopened unit based at the rear of the Bridge Community Centre in Lisburn.
The unit had sadly suffered recently due to severe flooding in 2007 but after refurbishment of the lower decks, they started enrolling cadets in September. In addition to the cadets, five new staff have also volunteered to give up their spare time in the training of the young people, which included theory based subjects such as engineering and communications to waterborne activities which include kayaking, sailing and power boating.
A uniformed and disciplined youth organisation using the training principles of the Royal Navy the Sea Cadets accepts young people from the age of 12 and should they so wish, they can continue in the organisation when they turn 18 as an adult volunteer.
The units Commanding Officer Lieutenant Robert MacLennan said: "It has been a great pleasure in bringing the Sea Cadets back to Lisburn after an uncertain period. We exist to provide structured training to the young people of Lisburn seeking that different style of delivery.
"As a charity in our own right, we rely on donations and the support of the local community to do what we do. We are all looking forward to further training and participation in the local community in 2011."
