					In Appreciation
I had not intended making any contribution to this book to mark the
Centenary of Seymour Street Methodist Church in Lisburn. Being one of those
privileged to have a preview I find that all that is necessary is said
either in the book itself or in the Author's. Introduction-with one
exception. Nothing is revealed of the Author himself, so I write this
    appreciation.
George Edward Orr, B.A., Dip.Ed., is Second Master of Friends' School,
Lisburn. He has been a member of staff there since 1968, when he came to
live in the town and joined Seymour Street Church. He quickly integrated
into the Church life and its activities, notably as a Local Preacher and
Sunday School Teacher. He has been editor of The Light, our Circuit
Magazine, and its predecessor, the News Sheet, from its inception.
Thus George Orr was an obvious choice by the Leaders to be the Author of
this Centenary Year History. Willingly he undertook this onerous task and
the Leaders of the Church are deeply indebted to him for the vitality and
human interest which his treatment and style have given to what could
have been a rather prosaic record. What was originally expected to be a
short pamphlet has blossomed into a valuable reference book which, it is
safe to say, will be treasured for and by future generations.
Only a few know anything of the hours and weeks of work which our Author
and Mr. Charles M. Allen, who has worked so closely with him in this
project, have spent in weaving together the story of Methodism in Lisburn.
This period of work covers many months of research and a great
deal of Summer holiday time in the compilation of the actual book. On behalf
of the Leaders, the congregation as a whole, and a much wider public
I offer them sincere thanks for all the time and energy which they have
    devoted to this historic record.

					Acknowledgment

Shortly after coming to Seymour Street in
1997, I read the history of Lisburn Methodism, compiled to
mark the centenary of the building of Seymour Street Church,
and written by George Orr. It helped me see something of the
work of God here over the one hundred years leading up to
1975. This new edition of Seymour Street's History includes
the 25 years since then. I am pleased to be part of those 25
					years.
It is an interesting time to be minister
at Seymour Street. This year brought us into a New
Millennium and has also seen the completion of our
marvellous new suite of Church Halls. What an appropriate
year in which to celebrate our 125th Anniversary.
As part of our Anniversary celebration it
was important that the history of the past 25 years should
be recorded. And so this up-dated account of the work of God
at Seymour Street has been written.
On my own behalf and on behalf of our
Leaders and Congregation I want to express our appreciation
to George Orr. How good it is that he has been able to add
the account of the past 25 years to his earlier history of
Lisburn Methodism. We are in his debt.
In celebrating our 125th Anniversary we
should not only reflect on what God has done but should look
forward with anticipation to what He will yet do. My prayer
is that we at Seymour Street will gladly be part of the new
history that God goes on writing among us.
