LISBURN'S newly restored war memorial was unveiled and rededicated as the city paused to remember those who gave their life in defence of their country last Sunday.

It includes the names of those from the area who had not been on the original monument.

The Mayor led wreaths on behalf of the people of Lisburn and the service ended with a prayer and benediction by Canon Cheevers. Generations of families took part in the Rededication and unveiling of the War Memorial and Act of Remembrance in Lisburn.

Members of the Royal British Legion paraded through the city to the Castle Gardens War Memorial. The parade was led by Lisburn Young Defenders band, while Lisnagarvey Silver Band played during the Service of Remembrance.

Chaplain of the Royal British Legion in Lisburn, Rev Canon Alex Cheevers led the service, which included two hymns that were sung when the original War Memorial was opened in 1923. There was an address by Canon Cheevers and a reading by Father Gerard McGreevy.

The oldest ex-serviceman on parade. Billy Moore, read the traditional Remembrance poem, 'In Flanders Fields', while Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson read the response 'We shall keep the Faith'.

The War Memorial was unveiled by the new Mayor, Councillor James Tinsley and the new names. which have been added to the War Memorial were read out by Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Lisburn, Maurice Leathem.
